Course Outline: Composition 11

Course Duration: You have one calendar year to complete this course from the date of Activation

Units of Study:

Unit 1: Communication

Unit 4: Personal and Social Responsibility

Unit 2: Novel Study

Unit 5: Creative and Critical Thinking

Unit 3: Personal and Cultural Identity

Final Exam

Introduction:

Using a variety of texts and through a variety of expressions, students will be provided the opportunity to explore the following Big Ideas:

  1. The exploration of text and story deepens our understanding of diverse, complex ideas about identity, others, and the world.
  2. People understand text differently depending on their world views and perspectives.
  3. Texts are socially, culturally, geographically, and historically constructed.
  4. Language shapes ideas and influences others.
  5. Questioning what we hear, read, and view contributes to our ability to be educated and engaged citizens.

Recommended prerequisites:

The Ministry of Education does not require a prerequisite for this course. However, you need to be reading and writing at grade level to be successful. Completion of two of the following: Literary Studies 10, Creative Writing 10, Spoken Language 10, Composition 10 and New Media 10, or equivalent, is recommended.

Evaluation:

  • Unit 1: Communication = 20% (inclusive of the activation assignment which represents 6%)
  • Unit 2: Independent Novel Study = 10%
  • Unit 3: Personal and Cultural Identity = 20%
  • Unit 4: Personal and Social Responsibility = 18%
  • Unit 5: Creative and Critical Thinking = 18%
  • Final Exam = 14%

Student Responsibilities: Students are expected to log onto the course and submit one assignment each week (or have contact with the instructor). If you are active and withdraw from an online course, the Ministry of Education regulations will prohibit you from retaking this online course for two reporting periods.
